ABN Newsletter President's Message
I am very pleased to write this update regarding recent developments with respect to our board. Let me begin by saying that we have an excellent and very hard working board of directors and committee chairs. All of our directors are volunteers and many devote several hours per week of their time on average to address board needs. Our board members often interact on daily basis to meet demands and challenges and plan for our future. Thanks to the work of Dr. Joseph Conroy and others I am happy to report a recent very significant increase in applications for our examination. This has been related at least in part to our introduction of a Senior Option examination process for Neuropsychologists well established in the field. The Senior Option involves lower fees and a requirement for submission of one work sample or scholarly publication and one hour of oral examination in the area of ethics. Please visit our ever evolving website which is managed by Dr. Richard Berg for additional information regarding this and other information.
For the past several years we have been developing a multiple choice examination to replace the written examination wherein applicants were required to generate a narrative in response to a selected clinical vignette. All new applicants are now required to take a 100 item multiple choice exam which will be updated regularly to keep pace with ongoing developments in the field. Dr. John Myers and others have spent hundreds of hours in developing this new test. Our new work sample chair, Dr. Tom McLaren has made some excellent modifications to streamline the work sample submission and review process.
Earlier this year ABN was included as a recognized board by language included in revised State of Florida psychology licensing law that now limits which boards practitioners may designate as evidence of board certification. Through financial contribution and written documentation, ABN has supported efforts by the New York State Association of Neuropsychology to modify a current law in that State which prohibits the use of technicians in Neuropsychological assessment. For more than a year, ABN has held a seat on the Interorganizational Summit on Education and Training in Neuropsychology (ISET). ISET is composed of twelve members from different organizations in neuropsychology who are evaluating whether the Houston Conference materials related to education and training in neuropsychology need to be updated and revised. ABN has also been invited to join the CNS Synarchy as well.
ABN has been invited to participate in an International Conference on Behavioral Health and Traumatic Brain Injury for four days in October of this year at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey. We have supported this important event financially and will be participating in meetings and a Congressional Brain Injury Task force that will include generating a comprehensive report to the U.S. Congress regarding recommendations for the evaluation of psychological and traumatic brain Injuries of returning military veterans. Our Board of Directors met formally for an Annual meeting in March of this year and completed several oral examinations of eligible candidates. We will be presenting a workshop regarding our examination process at the National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN) meeting in New York City in October of this year. At the NAN conference we will also be administering the written examination to candidates and performing oral exams as well as training new examiners. Because of the rapid rise in applications, we are considering adding an additional examination time and site not in association with an existing conference.
We are pleased that Dr. Elkhonon "Nick" Goldberg will be our featured speaker at the ABN continuing education breakfast workshop at the NAN conference from 7:00 am until 9:00 am on Friday 10-24-08. We hope that you will be able to join us for Dr. Goldberg's presentation on executive functions. We also hope that you will consider attending a continuing education conference sponsored by the American College of Professional Psychology in April of 2009 in San Diego, California. You will receive more information regarding this conference and an excellent group of speakers in the future. We thank Dr. Cecil Reynolds, Dr. Robert Leark and Dr. Barry Crown for their work in developing this conference which will dovetail with our annual board and examination meeting. In summary, we are a healthy and growing board who continue to administer an examination to certify the highest levels of competency in neuropsychology practice. We continue to evolve and grow and actively participate in related organizations. We advocate for our members and other organizations in the field. I am very pleased to serve as the President of this most impressive board.
Very Truly Yours,
Bradley G. Sewick, PhD, ABN

ABN PRACTICE ACTIVITIES ANALYSIS SURVEY OF PROFESSIONAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGISTS
By Arthur MacNeill Horton, Jr., John Meyers and Cecil R. Reynolds
ABN has conducted a study which identifies the most important areas of knowledge used by neuropsychologists when conducting professional activities and tasks. A summary of the study will be published in a future issue of the ABN newsletter, the PROFESSIONAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGIST. The current study is based on earlier efforts by ABN to identify the most import and crucial knowledge required of a Professional Neuropsychologist. An earlier practice analysis that was done by a committee consisting of Arthur MacNeill Horton, Jr., Ed.D., ABPP, ABN, and Francis J. Fishburne, Ph.D., ABPP, ABN, who reviewed their respective practices in clinical neuropsychology for six months, essentially monitoring the clinical incidence by which neuropsychological services were delivered. This was done in 1989, and the results were submitted to the ABN Board at a meeting in Orlando, FL. The practice analysis then formed the basis for the initial ABN examination procedures. The essential finding of the job/practice analysis was that assessment was the crucial and defining feature of the job/practice of a professional Neuropsychologist, and that upon the assessment task all other activities rested. Other activities that were secondary to the assessment would include providing of treatment, counseling services, cognitive rehabilitation, consulting, and supervision of students and technicians. In order to better standardize and objectify ABN examination procedures, in 2004, a Multiple Choice Examination Committee was established to create a multiple choice written examination for ABN. A data base of multiple choice questions in various areas of neuropsychology and allied fields was assembled with neuropsychologists who were teachers contributed previously developed multiple choice test questions and members of the committee writing out questions to fill gaps in content covered. Questions were reviewed by expert ABN Diplomates for appropriateness, difficulty level and clarity. Reviewed items were organized into content domains. Where there were gaps in the data base, committee members wrote new items which were peer-reviewed before being added to the data base of questions. The proper weighting of item content, however, requires a survey of professional opinions to ensure the multiple choice test covers the most vital areas appropriately. A survey instrument was created by the examination committee, which requested input on the most important, frequent and crucial knowledge areas in Professional Neuropsychology was pilot tested on the ABN Board of Directors and further refined. Subsequently a survey was e-mailed to over 200 ABN Diplomates. The survey requested 5 point ratings on knowledge areas in Professional Neuropsychology in a large number of content areas which were selected from knowledge areas identified at the Houston Conference and further refined by the Exam Committee and the ABN BOD.
The following results for the responders to the survey and their responses were obtained.
DEMOGRAPHIC DATA
GENDER Male-26, Female-7 (21% Female)
AGE: 29-39-none, 40-40-7, 50-59-19, 60-69-7
ETHNIC STATUS: Euro-American-31, Hispanic-American-1, Native-American-1
(6% Minority Status)
GEOGRAPHIC REGION Northeast-8, South-13, West-7, Mid-West-5
(Largest percentage from South-39%)
PRACTICE SETTING=Solo Private Practice-16, Group Private Practice-10,
Hospital-3, Public School-1, University-3 (79% in Private practice)
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES ANALYSIS SURVEY VARIABLES
IMPORTANCE FREQUENCY HARM POTENTIAL
NEUROANATOMY 4.1 3.7 3.5
NEUROLOGICAL
DISORDERS 4.4 4.3 4.1
PSYCHIATRIC
DISORDERS 4.3 3.9 4.1

NEUROCHEMISTRY 2.7 2.2 2.7
PSYCHOMETRICS 4.7 4.4 4.6

RELATIONSHIPS 4.9 4.8 4.8
The data were very straightforward in identifying the most important and most frequently utilized knowledge domains. These finding would appear to be consistent with other findings in the literature. A remarkable degree of consistency was evident in the data and therefore suggests that the data may be relied upon. Test items were selected for the ABN multiple choice examinations based on the ratings derived from the survey.
As the ABN Multiple Choice Examination allows for the evaluation of professional knowledge and expertise, the proper weighting of questions assures that the examination will be appropriately focused.
