ABN Newsletter President's Message
President's Message February 2010
This first presidential message is written with a grateful and expectant mind, with many thanks to Brad Sewick for his exemplary leadership these past two years as well as looking to the future in strengthening and expanding our organization. I have some very large shoes to fill and there is much work to be done. The 2nd Annual ACPN conference is just a week away and it promises to be bigger and better than last year given the number of registrants and the excellent presentations and posters that have been scheduled. Prior to the ACPN conference the Board of Directors will meet for the annual late winter/early spring meeting to set the agenda for the coming year. We will be discussing marketing and branding of ABN, relationship with ABPdN through ACPN, Practice Development efforts with Pat Pimental and Barry Crown, developing relationships with training programs and students, and keeping abreast of the most current issues such as the Division 40 definition of a neuropsychologist, the ISET survey evaluating the need for revisions to the Houston Conference, and the CNS Synarchy group among others. I have just returned from attending INS in Mexico and sat in on the CNS Synarchy meeting for Brad Sewick, as he became a new father and could not make the trip. Congratulations Brad!
The following is a brief synopsis of the CNS Synarchy meeting:
The CNS Synarchy group is made up of a number of Neuropsychological Agencies and groups, including but not limited to ABN, ABCN, APPCN, NAN, APA Div 40, and APA CoS representative. Celiane the chair of the CNS Synarchy had been on the APA CoS as a member and now is the chair of that committee. This APA committee is the group that oversees and designates what constitutes what a Specialty is compared to what a Proficiency is. So, for example Neuropsychology is a Specialty and Geropsychology is a Proficiency. Although Geropsychology has recently petitioned CoS to become a specialty.
Celiane mentioned that there is an opening within the APA CoS committee, and she would like to fill it with a neuropsychologist but has not had any takers as of yet. On the most recent agenda has been the development of appropriate language for drafting a Taxonomy of Training Requirements (so that differences between training programs can be described in similar and uniform terms). As an example, the terms Track, Emphasis, Experience, Practicum, etc. may mean very different things in training, supervision, experience, length of time in service between programs at the Pre-Doctoral, Internship and Post-Doctoral level. CoS has turned this task of defining terms within the Taxonomy over to CRISP. The ISET survey to assess the appropriateness for changing the Houston Guidelines was briefly mentioned, only that it has been sent out and people are sending it back in. No word about the outcome as of yet.
Another issue that came up included a proposal from the AACN Board to get all Neuropsychological organizations working together, around the terminology of "medically necessary criteria applied across the country" to target adversarial positions to reimbursement. There was a discussion that AAN (American Academy of Neurology) developed similar medically necessary criteria for service of various diseases, and one requirement for example was annual cognitive testing for Parkinson's and MS among others. Celiane stated that the AACN proposal concerned putting a group together to address insurance reimbursement, collect data state by state to find out who is paying for what diagnoses under what circumstances. NAN representative, Alex Troster, said that this is something that NAN has been involved with in the PAIC. It would seem appropriate for the ABN BOD committee on professional development (our own "PAIC") may be most helpful here to include Pat and Barry. What Celiane appears to be discussing is a PAIC to PAIC networking among the various Neuropsychology groups and organizations. There was also discussion about the development of position papers describing standards of care using evidenced based approaches for all Neuropsychologists to follow, so not to let other external non-neuropsychology agencies or groups dictate what are appropriate standards of care. Again, the NAN representative said that Standards of Care is really a legal term and even APA has shied away from using such absolute terms. So, the thought was to have teams representing the various Neuropsychology groups get together to come up with some guidelines for appropriate practice. All of the work appeared to be guild strengthening and building. ABN needs to continue its involvement and have a voice in this process.
There was a discussion to have future meetings at different venues, instead of just APA and INS to include NAN for example. There was no mention of having it at AACN. There was discussion about having a teleconferencing capability for future meetings where not all members could attend. This meeting was sparse with 5 members attending, but important for ABN not to be left out.
I look forward to serving you as the President of ABN, and welcome the sage advice of the current Board of Directors and Past Presidents as well as the thoughts and comments of the membership. Please feel free to contact me at any time and I will be happy to help out.
With kind regards,
Scott

Course D. Central Auditory Processing Function in Children: Neuropsychological Roots,
Realities, Current Controversies, and Future Directions
Presenter: Teresa Bailey, Ph.D.
Description: Fifty years of solid scientific research on central auditory processes has taken place largely outside the view of neuropsychology. At the same time, many children who present for neuropsychological evaluation have one or more risk factors for impaired auditory processing. This workshop will provide an overview of the neuroanatomy of central auditory processes, including lesion studies in children, and integrate these findings with research-based evidence of developmental and acquired impairments. Differential diagnosis and overlap with ADD/ADHD and language based disorders will be covered with case examples. Implications for clinical diagnostic and intervention practices and future research directions will be discussed.
Goals & Objectives Participants will be able to:
1. Identify auditory pathways and pre-linguistic signal analysis processes;
2. Describe what is unique about auditory processing disorders and what overlaps other
language-based disorders and attention; and
3. Identify developmental and acquired etiologies of auditory processing dysfunctions that
commonly present in children referred for neuropsychological assessment.
4:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Poster Session & Cocktail Hour
