ABN Newsletter President's Message
(Received 11 4 2009-editor's note)
I am very pleased to write my final President's Message at the conclusion of my two-year term in this office. It saddens me to inform you that after only six months of leaving this office, my predecessor and Past President, Dr. John Blase, was stricken with glioblastoma, which then took his life on 10/26/09. As many of you know, John had a passion for neuropsychology and was a fierce advocate for the causes he believed in. He frequently asked about the ABN Board into his final days. The board will be presenting his family with an inscribed silver plate at his memorial service on 11/8/09. He is missed by many including his wife, three children, a grandson and many friends and colleagues.
During the past two years, we have witnessed a great amount of change and growth within our organization due to the efforts of a very bright, talented and dedicated Board of Directors and active membership. I am proud to have worked with the board in this capacity during these times. I would like to highlight just some of our accomplishments during this period.
In 2008, we changed our organization acronym to ABN and successfully obtained a trademark. I want to thank Dr. Joseph Conroy and Dr. Tom McLaren in particular for their effective activities in this respect on our behalf. We have also been successful in improving our examination process, which is of course at the core of what we do. Several years ago, a group of us including Dr. Arthur MacNeill Horton, Dr. Michael Raymond, Dr. Cecil Reynolds, Dr. John Meyers, Dr. Barry Crown, myself and others developed an item pool for a multiple-choice written examination. Dr. Meyers has worked extensively in refining the instrument, and we are pleased that the multiple choice examination is now in place. Dr. McLaren has streamlined the procedures for the Work Sample submission and review process; and Dr. Marie Volbrecht has refined our Manual, which includes many improvements. The Manual is now available. We have processed many applicants. Dr. Joan Mayfield has coordinated the oral examination phase of the examination process. We completed eight oral examinations at our board meeting in San Diego in April of this year, and we have several oral examinations scheduled for next week at the NAN conference in New Orleans. Drs. Mayfield and McLaren will be training new board examiners at the NAN conference on 11/13/09.
In April of 2009, we held our First Annual Continuing Education Conference through the American College of Professional Neuropsychology (ACPN), which immediately followed our board meeting in San Diego. Despite the unforeseen very difficult economic times that we faced, the two-and-a-half-day conference was well attended and successful. The success of the conference was due in large part to the outstanding help that we received in organizing the event from Dr. Robert Leark in addition to the efforts of the conference committee including Dr. Alice Ruzicka, Dr. Crown, Dr. Robert Elliott and Dr. Reynolds. The conference presenters were outstanding, and the conference location, which was on a boat on the bay, did indeed make this a quite special occasion.
Given the success that we observed, we have planned a Second Annual ACPN Conference for February 26th through the 28th, 2010, that will follow the ABN board meeting at the Golden Nugget Hotel in Las Vegas. My successor, incoming President Dr. Scott Sautter, has worked with Dr. Leark, Dr. Reynolds and the committee to implement what will be another outstanding event. The program includes presenters Dr. Yossef S. Ben-Porath on the MMPI-2-RF (Restructured Form), Dr. Gerald Gioia on the BRIEF, Dr. Theresa Bailey on Central Auditory Processing Functions in Children, Dr. John Courtney on Pediatric Psychopharmacology, and presentations by Dr. Thomas Reidy and Dr. Michael Carlton concerning Death Penalty Assessments. There will also be a workshop on Ethical and Legal Issues by Dr. Theodore Wasserman, Dr. Robert McCaffrey and Dr. Crown. Basic hotel room rates for the recently renovated and beautiful hotel have been negotiated at perhaps unprecedented low rates ranging between $39 and $69 per night. We have been successful in obtaining financial support from several sponsors who will be exhibiting. This conference includes a pediatric neuropsychology track that was developed in association with the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology (ABPdN). We thank Dr. Kevin Bianchini and others for assisting in developing a productive affiliation between the ABN and ABPdN boards in their activities within ACPN. We look forward to many educational conferences in the future that will be of benefit to the participating membership organizations and the professional community in general. I thank Dr. Richard Berg for his continued help in managing our website, including improvements to help access information and ease the process of online registration for our events.
The ABN Board continues to hold invited seats in organizations including the Interorganizational Summit on Training and Education in Neuropsychology (ISET) as well as the CNS Synarchy. Please be aware that you will soon be receiving a survey from the ISET group, and results of that survey will be utilized to determine how education and training standards as set forth in the proceedings of the Houston Conference may require update and modification. We encourage you to carefully review the survey and respond to the items and review the Houston Conference materials, particularly with respect to language related to the qualifications and credentials of individuals providing supervision and training in designated and recognized training programs in neuropsychology.
ABN continues to maintain recognition status with the National Register of Health Care Providers in Psychology (NRHCPP) as a credentialing board. We have established mechanisms to provide updates in this respect to the Register regarding membership and changes, etc. In 9/08, we had an invited seat on an international committee meeting held at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Patterson, New Jersey, charged with the task of developing positions with respect to evaluation and treatment procedures for military personnel concerning traumatic brain injury and PTSD to be provided to Congress and published in The Clinical Neuropsychologist. We have recently been invited to write an entry on ABN that will be included in the Encyclopedia of Clinical Neuropsychology, which is to be published next year by Springer in a projected four volumes. Dr. Meyers has written and submitted an entry for us in this respect and is also following up on behalf of ACPN. We have philosophically and financially supported the effort of the New York State Association of Neuropsychology (NYSAN) regarding advocacy for the use of technicians in assessment. And finally, we have worked with the Florida Board of Psychology to maintain appropriate standards for the recognition of board certification status which is regulated in that state. We remain vigilant and responsive to new and related issues that present in many areas that are of interest to our members.
In closing, I have been very pleased to serve as the President of this dynamic and very active organization. Next week Dr. Sautter will become President, and I will continue to serve as Past President and in other designated capacities. Dr. Sautter has excellent clinical, administrative and leadership skills and will serve ABN well. I look forward to seeing you at the NAN conference next week in New Orleans. At the conference, we will be announcing results of the election regarding the two Member-at-Large seats on the Board of Directors. We are currently in the process of accepting nominations for the Office of President Elect. We will have a very visible presence at the NAN conference. We will again have a table in the exhibit hall. We will have representatives at the table during all open times. Special thanks to Dr. Volbrecht, Dr. Ruzicka and others for procuring materials including pens, mugs and candy, etc. that bear our logo and acronym which will be distributed from that table at the conference. Please stop at the table to visit and pick up your new lapel pin with the updated logo. Please consider attending our Annual Breakfast Continuing Education Workshop on Friday, 11/13, with presenter Dr. Nadia Webb on the State of the Literature on Neurobiological Differences. Please also attend the ABN General Membership Meeting on Friday, 11/13, at 12:00 p.m. Note that we will be presenting our annual invited workshop at NAN on 11/14 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. regarding our board certification process for those interested in pursuing our credential.
Again, I want to express my gratitude to the Board of Directors and everyone involved for continuing efforts that have cultivated our board into the impressive organization that it is today.
Very truly yours,
Bradley G. Sewick, Ph.D., ABN
President, American Board of Professional Neuropsychology

Houston conference needs to change. This will be announced on the ABNtalk list serv. Email blast is important. Dr. Sewick will let Dr. Berg know about this for the email blast. Dr. Sewick says the survey is about the content of training requirements, and that there is not a direct correlation to the definition.
v. TBI Congressional Task Force, Patterson, NJ, ABPN and ACPN 10-12-08 to10-15-08

dinner at 7:30. The ABN Gen meeting Sat Nov 14 at noon
a. The NAN 2009 BOD meeting Dr. Raymond scheduling rooms. Dr. Webb has agreed to provide CE program Update on Pediatric Neuropsychology.
xv. Relationship with ABPdN
a. Currently ABPdN remains autonomous and joins ACPN as Affiliates of the College and to pay $50 rather than $60 for normal affiliates. This would allow them to be autonomous and get the benefits of the college. Those who are ABPdN and ABNs are not charged that fee as they are already charged. All ABPdNs would need to agree and they would pay lump sum by ABPdN to ACPN. Then the ABPdNs would become Fellows of the ACPN.
xvi. Florida Board Issues, Cox, ABPP, NR, 4-24-09 hearing in Tampa, with Drs. Antell, Sesta, Hoffman, Kanter, and Crown
a. Closely monitored with ABN representation. Will wait to hear about what Dr. Kanter says after the meeting next week
xvii. ABN members using vanity board credentials
a. Need to strongly discourage ABN members listing credentials with vanity boards. Make a policy statement about ABN members' only listing credentials that are accepted by the National Register.
xviii. $500 donation to John Heinz Brain Injury Program and Hospital, letter to Tom Pugh
a. This was approved to send a donation to this program. Dr. Volbrecht will forward a check to Dr. Sewick, and he will forward to the Hospital President.
xix. Rod Swenson's proposal, board eligibility, marketing, NAN booth
a. Dr. Swenson made a proposal about above, and the BOD voted not to allow statements of being board eligible.
xx. Myths about ABN, specifically that non-doctoral level not examined and receiving Diplomate status
a. This has been completed. Dr. Reitan has been approved as an examined member. Maybe need a strike force to cancel out the statements about "myths" of ABN. Ask for names and if they do not comply file an ethics complaint. Michael Raymond as Executive Director to make direct, back channel email to the individual and ask for names and substantiated facts and if not file an ethics complaint with APA.
xxi. John Myers study plans
a. Carry over after lunch.
xxii. Dr. Antell's suggestion to have person/committee to represent ABN to other agencies
a. Dr. Perna will be the inter-organizational person as the BOD liaison to Dr. Antell's inter-organizational affairs of ABN.
xxiii. Discussion about putting into place a mechanism by which the National Register is advised as to "any substantive changes in functions, standards and procedures" (i.e. senior option, MC test, manual rating forms, etc.), and this mechanism would provide "evidence of the application of process improvement procedures to credential review and competency assessment."
a. Needed to have all this information reported to the NR on an annual basis, also to send information about the application procedures. The liaison person to the BOD will regularly fulfill this role with the NR and other organizations on an annual basis.
b. Are there other reporting needs to other agencies? State Boards that recognize Neuropsychology as a specialty. But also insurance companies have asked whether ABN members are in good standing. We should charge at lease $25 for official letter that the person is in good standing with the ABN BOD. Dr. Berg says that he can respond to these requests, fees, and forward to Dr. Volbrecht. Dr. Berg would then have a standard letter to contact Dr. Volbrecht and that there is a charge for the formal letter indicating certification is intact.
xxiv. Discussion of mechanism to keep us updated about membership updates, website data, payment of dues, etc.
a. Dr. Volbrecht has a mechanism to contact NR and others, and a mechanism for the next Treasurer. Dr. Volbrecht brought up a manual for the Board and committees for continuing agreement about duties and expectations of different members and what their roles would be. As an example, Dr. Blase switching from Past President to ACPN Executive Director and then because of health problems an acting Executive Director, Dr. Ruzicka was named.
b. Dr. Volbrecht to make this manual. Each member to write a few paragraphs to Dr. Volbrecht describing the roles of the various activities. She will add a chapter for the BOD members' role to the ABN manual.
c. Dr. Berg reported that if in arrears of dues then the individuals do not show up on the public access to the website. To be inactive means not paying dues for 3 or more years.
xxv. A button for paying dues on website via paypal is in place.
xxvi. Discussion was made about whether we want to go to a flat fee payment for exam process (Eg., $500) that may be an incentive for applicants to get through the process. This will be reviewed by Dr. Berg. This will be tabled for the time being.
xxvii. Dr. Meyers suggests we change website to indicate that pass for the MC exam is now set at 70%. He notes that evaluation forms for oral exam, work style exam, and work samples are now coded on a 70% scale for pass rate as well.

i. ABN trademark need to revise aspects of the document from the ABN as a noun to a verb, description of the ABN Diplomate rather than the noun. This will make it stronger and Dr. McLaren has done this. As soon as it is on the website it is a go and we pay $2500 for the fee and it will be done.

3. Drs. Pimental and Crown previously discussed but placed on hold because of the cost of $5000. Branding is important, maybe from our Mission Statement, and not put us at odds with the other boards. We are inclusive and we are looking for those who meet the minimal criteria. The separating factor comes one of the Houston Criteria versus the flexible criteria, we are more interest in knowledge base rather than academic approach. This is true for younger people, but not so for older practitioners. We need to rate programs and practices that meet our training requirements and to help encourage those post-docs toward ABN.

Course A. What the Forensic Neuropsychologist Needs to Know about Death
Penalty Litigation
Presenter: Thomas J. Reidy, Ph.D., ABPP
Description: This workshop will explore the unique psycho-legal issues at capital sentencing broadly divided into mitigation and violence risk assessment. A U.S. Dept. of Justice science based formulation will be used to demonstrate the nexus between adverse developmental trajectory and adult outcome. The scientific basis for violence risk assessment unique to a prison context will be demonstrated, as well as the methodological and conceptual errors made by mental health professionals at capital sentencing. The discussion of mitigation and risk assessment will include issues of relevance to neuropsychologists.
Goals & Objectives Participants will be able to:
1. Describe the difference between criminal responsibility and moral culpability in a
capital context;

Course D. Central Auditory Processing Function in Children: Neuropsychological Roots,
Realities, Current Controversies, and Future Directions
Presenter: Teresa Bailey, Ph.D.
Description: Fifty years of solid scientific research on central auditory processes has taken place largely outside the view of neuropsychology. At the same time, many children who present for neuropsychological evaluation have one or more risk factors for impaired auditory processing. This workshop will provide an overview of the neuroanatomy of central auditory processes, including lesion studies in children, and integrate these findings with research-based evidence of developmental and acquired impairments. Differential diagnosis and overlap with ADD/ADHD and language based disorders will be covered with case examples. Implications for clinical diagnostic and intervention practices, and future research directions will be discussed.
Goals & Objectives Participants will be able to:
1. Identify auditory pathways and pre-linguistic signal analysis processes;
2. Describe what is unique about auditory processing disorders and what overlaps other
language-based disorders and attention; and
3. Identify developmental and acquired etiologies of auditory processing dysfunctions that
commonly present in children referred for neuropsychological assessment.
4:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Poster Session & Cocktail Hour
Saturday February 27, 2010 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Course E. Neuropsychology and the Death Sentenced Inmate: An Effort to Understanding
Violence
Presenter: Michael B. Charlton, J.D.
Description: This workshop will focus on the role of neuropsychology and the topic of violence and the criminal law: the mitigation of penalty because of brain injury or trauma, diminished capacity, and extending the legal principles of Atkins (the exclusion of the mentally retarded from the death penalty) and Simmons (the exclusion of those under 18 from the death penalty) to other vulnerable population groups.
Goals & Objectives Participants will be able to:
1. Describe the basics involved in an understanding of the legal framework for capital defense;
2. Identify the types of tools a capital defense lawyer should be expected to provide; and

Test (CTMT)
Presenter: Arthur MacNeill Horton, Jr Ed.D., ABPN-CL, ABN, ABPP-BP, FACPN
Description: This workshop provides an overview and introduction to the TVCF (Reynolds & Horton, 2006) and the CTMT (Reynolds, 2000) including their conceptualization, development, and interpretation. The TVCF was recently developed and is constant with the Reynolds-Horton Model of Human Executive Functioning (RHMHEF), which postulates a strong general factor of executive functioning as well as Neurocognitive subcomponents of selected aspects of executive functioning which are discrete and robust. The TVCF provides a strong, standardized measure of executive functions that is complemented by the CTMT. The CTMT (Reynolds, 2000), a recently published, rapid measure (6-12 minutes) of executive functioning will be reviewed in comparable detail with common objectives.
Goals & Objectives Participants will be able to:
